October 7th-10th: Osaka and Kyoto
First, I took the bus to Osaka and stayed the night in a capsule hotel. Capsule hotel…sounds spacey, right? Well this one wasn’t made up of little plastic bubbles or anything, it was just a nice little box that I crawled into and pulled down a curtain. It also contained its own T.V. and A/C. Sound claustrophobic? Well, actually it wasn’t bad and I might even go as far to say that I would prefer staying in a capsule (even though my feet hung out the door) over a creaky bunk-bed in a hostel. After arriving in this quirky establishment in an area surrounded by love hotels, I thought it was un-wise to venture into the nighttime on my own but luckily I met four other very nice JETs who also wanted to brave the capsule and we had a great time wondering the city streets in crazy Osaka. The next day, I found Maile Cabral (from Boulder!) and we went to Amerika Mura, which I believe to be home to Osaka’s and probably Japan’s most outrageous fashion. A bizarre area modeled after maybe Manhattan? (it wasn’t clear), it was probably some of the best people-watching I have ever seen. We spent the rest of the weekend around Maile’s extremely rural but beautiful area outside of Kyoto, shopping, and admiring the Golden Pavilion.

The infamous capsule hotel...

Who knew that there were two of these?

That last picture is HOT! What's the predominant religion in Japan? What do you know about it?
