October 2nd: Hike up Mt. Ishizuchi
I hiked with three others up Ishizuchi-san, the tallest mountain in Western Japan. It was really beautiful and many of the trees had already changed colors. The most sacred of the 88 Shikoku Temples is at the top which is interesting because many people who climb it wear white and recite chants as they hike. In fact, the mountain is so sacred that women were forbidden to climb it until recently and it is still closed to women on July 1st, the first day of climbing season.
